As Australia progresses into the Digital era, there is one industry in particular that will carry the responsibility of this transition more than any other – the ICT sector. It is because of this that the industry is experiencing a shortage of skilled workers, with many of the skills required to perform the transformation not being taught in universities here as yet. The industry has been turning to international talent to fill the skills gaps and ensure that important projects are handled by highly skilled people with expertise in the relevant areas.
Deloitte predicts that, “…the number of ICT workers will increase from around 640,800 in 2016 to around 721,900 in 2022, at an average annual growth rate of 2.0%”. This increase is significant, although ICT roles are not only limited to the ICT sector, as most industries rely heavily on ICT skilled workers to develop and run the technological aspects of their businesses. Expect ICT skills to be in demand in most industries, as businesses ramp up their digital automation initiatives.
With so much talk of skill shortages and expansion of the ICT sector, which actual job titles will be in highest demand in the coming year? Deloitte’s report tells us that the most advertised ICT roles in 2016 were for Project Managers, Business Analysts and Business Development Managers. We have compiled a list of the positions for which many ICT companies will be scouring the globe for talent in 2018:
#1 ICT technical and professional roles:
Projected to grow from 189,503 to 217,975 by 2022, ICT technical and professional roles such as IT infrastructure, web programmers and cloud computing specialists as well as more business oriented IT roles including ICT sales professionals will be in high demand. As digital activity increases in Australia, so does the need for advanced skills in cyber security. Cyber security related roles are steadily increasing and it is believed that it will “… employ an additional 60,000 people by 2030 (Deloitte 2017a).” Skills required to fulfil these types of roles include: Highly developed analytical skills, system monitoring, software design and threat detection skills.
#2 ICT management and operations roles:
ICT manager and organisation analyst roles are also set to increase in the next few years. In order to be able to fulfil roles of this nature, candidates must have solid experience and analytical, coordination, technical and leadership skills. Typical roles include Business Systems Analyst, Computer Engineer, Network Manager and Operations Manager.
#3 ICT industry admin and logistics support:
System administrators, IT Administrators, Network Engineers are just some of the roles that fall under this category and we will see rising demand in support type roles as organisations require system support to ensure automated processes run smoothly and any bugs or disruptions can be resolved swiftly so as not to inconvenience the user.
Problem solving skills, technical knowledge, interpersonal skills are high on the list of required skills for Administrators. Network Engineers are usually required to have up to date Cisco and Microsoft certifications, engineering and troubleshooting skills, amongst others.

Migration
LinkedIn reports that ICT roles brought into Australia the highest number of international talent, proving that Migration still plays a key role in the supply of ICT skills that Australia demands. The Australian government has recently brought in changes to the visa system in order to encourage the appropriate sourcing of overseas talent and it is now even more geared towards addressing our most vital skills gaps. Migration will continue to play a key role in filling Australia’s skills gaps in 2018 and is a genuine avenue for organisations to explore when searching for specific skill sets.
As Australian businesses look towards 2022, over the next few years it will be crucial to have the right talent in place. Entity Solutions has a Migration Division that can assist you with employee sponsorship and application preparation and lodgement.
Entity Solutions also has an On Hire Labour Agreement (OHLA),  which means that we have the ability to sponsor the candidate on your behalf, which can be beneficial to your organisation.

Would you like to attend one of our Migration Roadshow events?
In October and November this year, Entity Solutions will host a series of Employer Migration Information sessions in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. These sessions will help businesses make informed choices around talent attraction and sourcing strategies, and how Migration can form a part of your overall plan for addressing skills gaps.
