Growth in the ICT sector producing a satisfied contingent workforce

Organisations across all sectors and regions are looking for smarter ways to deliver their services, ways to automate manual processes that will streamline the digital experience for their customers.  With that in mind it’s not surprising to hear that IT hiring demands have grown substantially. According to the Australian Department of Employment, vacancies for ICT professionals grew by 11.9 per cent over 2015.
As an impact, the way in which work is being undertaken is shifting more toward assignment and project based work.  ICT professionals make up much of our contingent workforce and it seems they are more than content with the lifestyle contract work offers them.
According to the latest IPro Index, of which 49% of respondents identified themselves an ICT Professional, it was revealed that contracting professionals are ‘pulled’ not ‘pushed’ into contracting work.  This has been a consistent trend over the last 7 years, with the number one reason IPros choose contracting being the variety of work they experienced.
About the IPro Index survey:
Conducted annually by Monash University in partnership with Entity Solutions, the research study comprises a collection of four key areas including; lifestyle, wellbeing, commitment and support.  These areas capture overall attitudes towards professional contracting.
Key findings from the latest IPro Index:

  • The lifestyle drivers behind the IPros’ choice to engage in contracting work are variety of work, sense of freedom and flexible hours
  • Wellbeing is again very high for 2015 with 91% of contractors saying they are proud of the work that they do
  • 1 in 2 IPros feel a sense of commitment, saying their current client organisation has a great deal of personal meaning to them
  • The perceived support from clients has increased this year reaffirms many IPros feel their current client organisation values them.
